Ebook About
From the 1940s through the 1960s, young pregnant women entered the front door of a clinic in a small North Georgia town. Sometimes their babies exited out the back, sold to northern couples who were desperate to hold a newborn in their arms. But these weren't adoptions--they were transactions. And one unethical doctor was exploiting other people's tragedies.Jane Blasio was one of those babies. At six, she learned she was adopted. At fourteen, she first saw her birth certificate, which led her to begin piecing together details of her past. Jane undertook a decades-long personal investigation to not only discover her own origins but identify and reunite other victims of the Hicks Clinic human trafficking scheme. Along the way she became an expert in illicit adoptions, serving as an investigator and telling her story on every major news network.Taken at Birth is the remarkable account of her tireless quest for truth, justice, and resolution. Perfect for book clubs, as well as those interested in inspirational stories of adoption, human trafficking, and true crime.

Book Taken at Birth: Stolen Babies, Hidden Lies, and My Journey to Finding Home Review :

This book tells the true story of the author's search for answers, after finding out that her parents had illegally purchased her and her sister when they were babies. The book is about learning the truth, and about the corrupt doctor that sold many babies out of his clinic over a 20 year period. There are 17 total chapters, and about 200 pages; so it is a fairly short read. The book starts with the author describing her earliest memory of hearing about being adopted. She vividly recalls the entire scene, being six years old and hearing her sister crying to her parents because another child told her she was an adopted “black market” baby. Apparently relatives on their mom's side of the family spread the information, even though her parents had hoped to keep it a secret from the children. Her descriptions of growing up dealing with the other kids in town teasing her about it were heart-wrenching; it is hard to imagine how difficult that would be.As the book continues, we hear about more childhood memories, and then finally the author's father telling her all the details of how they bought her years ago. There are many sad parts here that I won't go into, but be warned some of this book is tough to read through.Eventually, when the author is ready to find out more about her birth family, she hires a private investigator, that actually suggests to her that she could find the details herself. This seems to have shaped the entire rest of the author's life, as she becomes a PI herself, trains and takes on other cases, just to develop the skills to sleuth out her own history.Following the author on her quest as she faced dead ends and lost records was captivating, and it is really incredible how determined she was to find the truth. Even though there wasn't exactly justice to be served, as the doctor had passed away by the time the author returned to investigate; the fact that she sought to expose the details of his operation in order to bring closure to herself and others was impressive. This book was tough to read at times; mostly because of the depressing content, and partly because there was something about the blunt, direct writing style that wasn't exactly my favorite. Still, the story is pretty remarkable, and it left me feeling a strange mixture of sad and optimistic. Sad that some people have to live through such painful experiences, but optimistic that some people will never give up until they uncover the truth.
I read this in one sitting. I couldn't put it down. This story is so unreal. It's so hard to believe that this went on in my lifetime. It is very well written. It is riveting. I found myself holding my breath one minute, crying the next, and then smiling at one of the memories. It's a heart breaking story, yet there's good coming from the horror in the families being reunited. Seriously, it's a must read!
